Fireworks

In Scarborough, adults can buy fireworks any time of the year. Some people want Scarborough to adopt the by-law that applies to the rest of Toronto-that adults can buy fireworks only in the week before May 24th and July 1st. Others want a city-wide ban on fireworks.

Proponents of changing the by-law point to the damage that occurs every year during Victoria Day celebrations.

Defenders of the status quo argue that the stricter by-law in the rest of Toronto didn’t protect its residents against foolish or malicious behaviour. They also argue that prohibition won’t keep fireworks out of the hands of those determined to use them.

Driveway Widening

The present by-law

  • If you have a single car garage, you can widen your driveway but you can only park on the portion in front of the garage. Same for a two car garage.
  • If you park on the widened portion, the City will issue a notice of violation. If there is no compliance, the city will come on to the property and place a 6" concrete curb barrier to mark the edge of the legal width
  • When a street is being resurfaced, curb cuts made to match a widened driveway will be reduced to the original size and the boulevard restored to a grassed condition.

Proponents of the by-law point to the fact that one of the first signs of a rooming house is a large number of cars parked in front of the house or in the driveway. They argue, that these regulations discourage rooming houses, absentee landlords, preserve greenspace and protect communities.

Opponents of the by-law argue that property owners should be allowed to pave their property according to the needs of its residents. They point out that under current regulations it is unnecessarily difficult to accommodate all vehicles belonging to family members residing in the same house.

What do you think?

I agree with the by-law. Property owners and residents should not be able to widen driveways to accommodate a large number of vehicles in their driveway.

I disagree with the by-law. Property owners and residents should be able to widen their private driveways to accommodate the needs of the household.

I believe that residents should be able to widen driveways under certain conditions involving plans and a permit.
